We've received the latest batch of Accurascale's BR Mk.1 'Suburban' coaches – now available to order. Issued from the manufacturer's new tooling, models represent a major upgrade for post-war and early BR era layouts, with some internal users lasting into the 1980s.

The BR Mk.1 'Suburbans': a brief history

Introduced in the early 1950s, the British Railways Mk. 1 'Suburban' coaches were designed to replace the wide variety of ageing pre-Grouping suburban stock still in service after nationalisation. Built primarily at BR’s Wolverton, Swindon and Derby works, these coaches featured all-steel bodies and simple, rugged construction suited to intensive stop-start suburban working.

Unlike their corridor counterparts, the suburban variants were non-corridor, compartment stock, typically arranged in 57ft lengths with either open or compartment seating layouts. They appeared in both brake second and composite formations, operating in sets of up to ten vehicles on busy suburban routes. Commonly seen around London, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow and other major cities, they became a familiar part of the daily commuter scene for nearly three decades.

The Mk. 1 'Suburbans' saw widespread use from the mid-1950s through to the late 1970s, with some examples lasting even longer on secondary duties and departmental use. Their robust design and longevity made them one of BR’s most successful suburban coach types.

With previous models selling out fast, we expect these latest arrivals to follow suit. All are priced at £74.95 (each) - explore the new range now.
