Bachmann has revealed four new 1:76 scale Alexander Y-Type buses, set to join its EFE Road die-cast range in December 2025, and all available to pre-order from us now.

The new EFE Road models use updated AY-Type coach tooling with added details like mirrors, opaque roof vents, and door variants matching the originals. The Alexander Y-Type was built by Walter Alexander & Co in Falkirk, Scotland.

Introduced as a prototype in 1961, production began in 1963, with 3,266 units made over 20 years. Variants included small and large window models in both long and short forms. Over 2,800 went to the Scottish Bus Group and its predecessors.

Did you know?

Highly versatile, the Y-Type was built on various chassis including the Leyland Leopard, AEC Reliance, Seddon Pennine 7, and Ford R series. Its modular construction allowed for a range of features, such as single-piece, two-leaf, or four-leaf doors, and various seating configurations.

The front design evolved over time, with major changes in 1971 when the AY or AYS Type was introduced – ‘A’ for alloy construction and ‘S’ for bus spec – featuring twin grilles. In 1983, it was succeeded by the lighter P Type but remained in service into the 2000s.
