DCC Concepts point motors explained
Wiring up a new layout or upgrading pointwork? Your choice of point motor matters. DCC Concepts’ Cobalt family is one of the most versatile ranges on the market. It offers slow-action, above- or under-board and DCC-native options, plus a comprehensive set of accessories to make installation neat and reliable. Below is a clear, practical guide to the different Cobalt products we stock at TMC, what each one does best, and how you might use them on your layout.
What makes Cobalt different?
DCC Concepts designed Cobalt motors to be reliable, consume low-power at idle, be adjustable and suitable for AC, DC or DCC systems. They offer:
- Slow, prototypical throw (gentle on turnout blades)
- Adjustable fulcrum so throw force and blade closure can be tuned
- Very low current draw (good for large layouts)
- A lifetime warranty from DCC Concepts
1. Cobalt iP Digital (DCP-CB1DiP, packs available)
What it is: A DCC-on-board slow-action point motor. It accepts DCC commands directly and can be controlled from your cab or DCC control system without requiring separate accessory decoders.
Best for: Modellers who want to address turnouts directly from their DCC system for route control and feedback, or who want simple wiring with local DCC addressing. The iP Digital supports 7–23V DCC, has software-driven throw direction and a very low static current draw.
Single and multi-packs available here: DCP-CB1DiP single; DCP-CB6DiP 6-pack
2. Cobalt iP Analogue (DCP-CB1iP)
What it is: The analogue/DC version of the iP slow-action motor above. It can be driven by simple DC switching, DCC accessory decoders or panel switches.
Best for: Traditional analogue/DCC layouts that want slow, prototypical motion without adding DCC addressing to each turnout. Ideal where you want large numbers of motors but want to keep wiring basic.
We carry single units and multi-pack deals of six or 12 units
Installation tips
- Adjust the fulcrum to fine-tune blade closing pressure — this reduces wear and improves reliability
- If using DCC control, the iP Digital saves you accessory decoders and gives DCC feedback outputs for computer or panel interfacing
- Keep wiring tidy with colour-coded cable and extension leads — it makes troubleshooting far easier
